HOMEMADE WARM APPLESAUCE

The smell of homemade applesauce cooking on the stove is absolutely heavenly. It certainly brings back memories of what Grandma used to make. I say why not bring back this old favourite and use everyone's number one fruit - apples! Although I like to buy pre-made applesauce and I do use it quite a bit in my cooking; I wanted to treat myself to something more from back in the day. I say let's bring back homemade applesauce and put apples into the limelight on it's own, without a crust or cake in sight!

Yields around 2 cups

Ingredients:

  • 6 apples i.e. like macintosh, peeled, cored and chopped
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup apple juice or water
  • 1 cinnamon stick

In a medium sized saucepan, add and stir in all of the listed ingredients. Turn the heat to medium and wait until it bubbles. As it bubbles you will notice some foam developing on top; just skim the foam onto a bowl and disgard. Bring the heat down to a simmer and wait about 15 minutes. The apples should have cooked down like the picture shown above. Take out the cinnamon stick, cool the applesauce for 15-20 minutes then serve warm.
